~North Dakota~

Our day started in Miles City, Montana.
You always need a little yo-yoking in the morning
I thought this was funny.
Our car was filthy so I guess we were "Un American"
Hello, North Dakota.
It wasn't nearly as flat as Dan said it was going to be.
At least not when we first got into N. Dakota that is.
We stopped off at a scenic view.
This was across the highway.
I wonder whats in the cave.
Wild sunflowers were everywhere.
The scenic view
Back in the car and on the road.
The kids have the camera now.
Self portrait
The clouds were really pretty.

The Enchanted Highway
Created by:  Gary Greff
Gary created The Enchanted Highway in an effort
to bring people to the small town of regent.
He was afraid that this small farming town would die
if it relied solely on farming.  He saw people pulling off the road to
snap pictures of a hay bale strong man and wondered if people
would stop for metal structures.  He began welding in 1989.

Deer Crossing
2002
The buck is 70 feet tall and 60 feet long
The Doe is 50 feet tall and 50 feet long!
Hayden and Phedora look so small!!
There was also a maze.
The kids both took turns leading us through.
We had fun getting lost and finding our way.
This is by far the biggest one we have seen.

Driving to the next sculpture we saw this truck off in
the distance.  We thought it was our next destination.
As we got closer we realized it was a truck with a HUGE
load.  We had to pull quite aways off the road for it to pass.

The remnants of the old town bank.

Grasshopper's Delight
1999
This is the largest of the grasshoppers
he is 40 feet tall and 50 feet long.

Might I suggest to not get into these kid toys as an adult.
Getting in was easy, getting out not so much.
Fields of Wheat.

Fisherman's Dream

This one must have taken the longest to build.
The lake surface is 50 feet tall

30 feet long
This trout is 70 feet.
Phedora is so tiny next to it.

Inside the coach taking a break from the sun.
It was about 95 degrees outside

Dragonflies, butterflies and mosquito's were everywhere.

12 telephone poles hold her up.
The Tin Man is 45 feet tall

The Tin Boy is 23 feet tall.

The Town of Regent
32 miles south of the Interstate
we arrived in a dusty little town.

Hayden as the tin Boy

Phedora as The Tin Lady

Some wheat art at the Regent Cafe.
For most of our trip we made our own lunches
but we made an exception to have lunch at the Regent Cafe.

About 10 farmers came in for lunch so it was a long wait
to get our food.  So we killed time taking pictures.

Phedora made a cup person while waiting for lunch.
I didn't get any pictures of the food but it was delicious!
We all got bacon cheeseburgers with a side of fries and onion rings.
The hamburger patties were formed by hand, the buns appeared to be homemade,
the fries were cooked perfectly and the onion rings were the best I have ever had.
The burgers were juicy and delicious.  I'm so glad we decided to stay for lunch.
Geese in Flight
2001
Geese in Flight was accepted in 2002 by the
Guinness World Book as the World's Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture.
It stands 110 feet tall, 154 feet wide and weighs 78.8 tons (157,661 pounds)!
The sun burst is made of over 300 lengths of well pipe.
The sculpture took 4 years to build at a cost of over $150,000.
The Highway from the Interstate
It was so pretty to look back at the farm land that we drove through.
The kids were pretty much done by the time we got to this one.
The rest of our day was mostly spent driving.
We did stop at McDonalds for ice cream.  It was 98 degrees out and
hard to keep up with the melting ice cream.
